Denim Fits and Styles

Everything you need to know about Jeans

Jeans are pants or trousers and can come in all shapes and sizes. Although most people perception is that Jeans were first around in American western times this is not correct. The first comtemperey use of the word jean comes from the French word for the city of Genoa in Italy where the first denim trousers were made. The word denim comes from a sturdy fabric called serge which was originally made in Nimes, France. Denim is actually made from a rugged cotton twill textile which the weft passes under two or more warp fibres which gives its very long lasting durable fabric.

Some of the most popular clothing brands around toady and are exteremly well known for their denim are Diesel, G-Star, Miss Sixty, Energie and two of the best known for their denim are Wrangler and Levis who are two of the oldest manufatures of Jeans.

In particular Womens denim has become more and more prevelent over the last 10 years with women using jeans as not just a source to be comfortable but also using them as a fashion statement and a great way to create that perfect outfit.

The styles of denim vary so much today with Miss Sixty and Diesel now becoming firm favorites with the female fashion freternaty.

Some of Miss Sixty style over the years have included Candy Palos, Ex Love, Maxi Love, Blitz, Wish, Iced Wish, Super Wish, Ferguson, Zip Shot, Radio, Sibel, Wilkie and Perkins to name but a few. Diesel also have a fantasic array of styles, cuts and finishes on their Denim collection.

When it comes to the fits here are some basic rules when buying your denim. The first one is what kind of Rise you are looking for, the rise is the height at which the jean sits on your waist line. So low rise will sit on your hips and a standard fit will sit higher up. Usually the Smaller you are the lower rise tends to suit you more and visa versa, although I would have to say at this stage its always important to try on as many style when Jean shopping to find that perfect fit, never rule out a style because you think they wont suit you, as usually this could be the perfect style for you.

The next thing to consider is what style you require, Flared, Boy fit, Skinny, Second Skin or a Boot Cut.

The Flared leg jean can come in many different forms, how much the flare graduates from the top of the jean, where the leg actaully starts to flare and how large the flare is on the jean. As a rule the larger the flare, the taller you are the better, as a large Flared jean on a shorter person can really make you look even smaller. However pick the right flare for your height and it can really lenghten your leg and give you that super long leg look.

The Boyfit jean is a jean that is still fitted on the bum area and the waist but has a wide leg right the way down, these jeans are probably the most comfortable style of denim and in particular Miss Sixty’s Sibel and Wish Jeans are two that we would recommend. This jeans has only really come to the forefront recently and has been taken from the mens style of denim hence why they get their name Boyfit or Boyfriend Fit Jeans.

The Skinny Jean does what it say on the tin, This is basically a jean that is skinny fit against your leg and have a drainpipe shape down your leg getting smaller at the bottom, these can sometimes finish at the ankle and have become so popular with outfits for a nightout. They are great for tucking into your boots and also go with a pair of heels. The Skinny Jean tends to be a low rise style.

The Second Skin fit is basically a skinny jean but as it states the whole jean is designed to mould around your entire leg, giving the ultimate shape, a tip for these is if you have a great legs then these are perfect for you, although be warned if you have issues with your legs, these really are not the best style for you as they show up everything.

The last style of jeans are the Boot Cut, these over the years have been the most popular as they are so easy to wear, suit every shape and size and can be worn casually or but together with an outfit for the evening. If anyone if struggling for a style to find then we would definatly reccomended you seek these out.

Last but not least is the fashion jean, these are usually taken of what has been seen on the catwalks for the season and can come in any shape or size and tend to not follow the usuall denim style, sometimes they can have a high waist, or a super flare, or even twisted denim. These jeans are fun and are always on trend but the one thing you have to ask yourself is, is it better money to buy something that isnt going to go out of fashion.

With regards to the wash a jean has and the finish, these can vary so much, Jeans are usually though of as being Blue but can now be found in any colour because manufactures just dye the cotton, although some companies do have specials ways of washing a dye through some denim, like hand scrunching them up and leaving these on a washing line to dry, giving each pair a very individual look. At the end of the day though, it is up to you to find the perfect pair of jeans that suit you best and we cannot stress enough the key to this is to make sure you try as many pairs on as possible.
